| Nyogen Nowak "Zen Dust" Fuji - Mountain of Non-Duality Fuji is represented by two characters, 富士, that signify "wealthy person", but in the Manyoshu, the ancient anthology of Japanese poetry, it was represented by the ideogram 不二, fuji “not two”, which in Buddhist terminology means non-duality, one of undivided unity of all things, in Sanskrit, advaya. It has also been written as fujin 不尽, “inexhaustible” or also as fushi 不死, “no-death.” This waka poem was composed by Yamaoka Tesshu (1836-1888), famous sword master, calligrapher and enlightend zen man on his way back to Tokyo, after dokusan with the abbot of Ryutakuji, when Mt. Fuji suddenly came into his view and he experienced a deep spiritual insight. |
